OCTOBER 2023 - PRESENT

Environmental Planner (Plant Support Specialist)

  • Analyze and inspect shoreline properties for compliance with the Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for the Smith Mountain Pumped Storage Hydro-Electric Project to write an average of 10 Status of Property Reports weekly.

  • Utilize ArcGIS to develop and maintain spatial databases for the shoreline management division. Use these databases to help write the draft ‘Proposed Changes to Aids to Navigation’ Report, Status of Property Reports, and various shoreline permits. Taught co-workers how to operate the GIS database for their own research for report and permit writing. 

  • Review and process permit applications for shoreline development projects, including docks, vegetation removal, and shoreline stabilization. Issue these permits. 

  • Study management plans and shoreline regulations to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permitting requirements.

  • Collaborate with landowners, local communities, and regulatory agencies to address environmental concerns.

Planner II

  • Assisted in the creation of the Roanoke County 200 Plan, an update of the County's comprehensive plan. 

  • Researched development policies on matters pertaining to County planning.

  • Answered inquiries from the public concerning planning and zoning policies.

  • Prepared technical reports, using Adobe InDesign, for Planning Commission meetings. 

  • Created PowerPoint presentations for Planning Commission meetings. 

  • Represented the County as a member of the Roanoke Regional Housing Network.

  • Reviewed site plans, landscape plans, and plats as part of the development review process. Provided red-lines to developers.

  • Discussed development and zoning issues with the public. Used customer service skills to answer questions and resolve conflicts.

  • Used ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, Google Drive and several other programs to create staff reports for Planning Commission and City Council meetings.

  • Assisted City Planners in writing ordinances.

  • Assisted the Neighborhood Preservation Unit of the police department in code enforcement.
